20 or 21 October: When is Diwali and Lakshmi Puja?

There is often confusion about whether Diwali and Lakshmi Puja should be celebrated on October 20 or 21 in 2025, since the festival falls on Amavasya Tithi, which spans both days.

According to the Hindu calendar and Drik Panchang, Lakshmi Puja in 2025 is scheduled for the evening of October 20, as the Amavasya Tithi begins at 3:44 PM on October 20 and ends at 5:54 PM on October 21.

However, the Pradosh Kaal-the most auspicious period for performing Lakshmi Puja-falls on the evening of October 20 between 5:58 PM and 8:25 PM, with Vrishabha Kaal overlapping from 7:08 PM to 9:03 PM. This timing makes October 20 the correct day for Diwali and Lakshmi Puja celebrations, even though Amavasya continues into the next day.

Diwali 2025: Lakshmi Puja Muhurat, Kartik Amavasya Thithi As Per Panchang and Hindu Calendar

The most important day of Diwali is the third day, when Lakshmi Puja is performed. This year, Diwali and Lakshmi Puja fall on October 20, 2025.

According to Drik Panchang, the shubh muhurat (auspicious timing) for performing Lakshmi Puja is as follows:

  • Pradosh Kaal: 05:58 PM to 08:25 PM
  • Vrishabha Kaal: 07:08 PM to 09:03 PM
  • Lakshmi Puja Muhurat: 07:08 PM to 08:18 PM

The Amavasya Tithi, which is considered crucial for Diwali celebrations, begins at 03:44 PM on October 20 and ends at 05:54 PM on October 21.
