Consumer Durables Sector in India Set for Growth Driven by Premiumisation and Category Expansion

The electrical consumer durables (ECD) sector in India is set for notable growth, according to Crompton Greaves Consumer Electricals Ltd (CGCEL). This expansion is driven by premiumisation, a shift from unorganised to organised markets, and the broadening of product categories. The growing middle class also plays a crucial role, as rising disposable incomes enable more people to purchase consumer durables.

Growth in Indias Consumer Durables Sector

Middle Class Growth and Consumer Preferences

The Indian middle class is expected to comprise 47% of the population by 2030-31. This demographic shift is significant for the ECD industry, as it expands the consumer base and increases demand across various product categories. Consumers are now prioritising products that enhance health and well-being, creating opportunities for companies to develop smart products that cater to these preferences.

Smart homes, equipped with IoT and AI-enabled devices, are becoming increasingly popular. Products that integrate seamlessly with other smart devices are in high demand, offering companies a chance to innovate and capture a lucrative market segment. This trend highlights the potential for growth in the consumer durables sector.

Government Initiatives and Market Opportunities

Government initiatives like the PM Kusum Scheme for solar pumps, housing for all, power for all, and rural electrification are expected to significantly boost the consumer durables sector. These schemes support the industry's progress by promoting energy efficiency and renewable energy adoption.

Addressing shareholders, CGCEL Chairman D Sundaram stated: "ECD industry in India is poised for significant growth, driven by premiumisation, a shift from unorganised to organised markets, and category expansion." He emphasised that consumers now seek greater value through aesthetics, durability, performance, and energy savings.

CGCEL is strategically positioned to capitalise on these emerging opportunities by focusing on consumer-centric products that enhance comfort and convenience. The company launched Crompton 2.0 in June 2023 to drive business growth and profitability through innovation.

In FY25, CGCEL reported standalone revenue of Rs 7,028.29 crore and a profit after tax of Rs 563.18 crore. These figures reflect the company's strong financial performance and its ability to leverage market opportunities effectively.

By introducing premium products with health benefits, businesses can capture valuable market share. The emphasis on regulatory standards for energy efficiency and safety further supports this growth trajectory. CGCEL aims to build on these trends by enhancing product offerings that align with consumer demands.
