CBT Extends ITR Filing Due Date But Portal Glitches Continue: Check Income Tax Help Desk To File ITR Easily
Despite the Finance Ministry extending the Income Tax Return (ITR) filing deadline to September 16, 2025, many taxpayers are still struggling to meet the deadline due to persistent technical glitches on the Income Tax Department's e-filing portal. Originally set for September 15, the one-day extension was intended to offer relief, but frustrations have only grown as users continue to face website crashes, login issues and form upload errors.
CBT Extends ITR Filing Due Date But Income Tax Portal Showing Technical Glitches
Today marks the final opportunity for non-audit cases to submit their ITRs for the financial year 2024-25. However, as the deadline looms, users are reporting widespread technical difficulties. These include the portal failing to load, repeated site crashes, and functionality issues, all of which have caused significant stress for last-minute filers.

Social media platform X (formerly Twitter) has become an outlet for frustrated taxpayers. One user sarcastically commented, "ITR deadline extended, but the portal still needs its own extension... Sometimes it lets you log in, sometimes it crashes. Guess patience is the new tax this season!"
Another user detailed their exhaustive troubleshooting attempts, saying they had "deleted temporary files, cleared browser cache & cookies, tried in multiple browsers, tried in incognito mode, disabled browser extensions, browsers are up to date, tried different networks, but..... Portal is dead."
Final Day for Non-Audit Cases
The Finance Ministry announced the one-day extension very late at 11:48 PM on September 15-while also scheduling portal maintenance from 12:00 AM to 2:30 AM on September 16. Despite these efforts, users continued to face issues. As one user put it, "The portal crashes, taxpayers struggle, professionals burn out... And the grand solution? Extend the ITR deadline by exactly one day."
Many users feel that a single day of extension is inadequate. "Extension of 1 day is not helping as portal is in the same state like yesterday since morning," wrote one individual. As of now, authorities have not made any announcements regarding a further extension of the deadline.
Facing Problem in Filing ITR? Check Income Tax Department Help Desk and Workarounds
The Income Tax Department has advised users facing issues to clear their browser cache, use a different browser, or send their PAN and mobile number to orm@cpc.incometax.gov.in for assistance. In addition, the help desk is available 24/7 via phone, live chat, WebEx, and social media support.
The department has also recommended not disabling browser settings like Cascading Style Sheets (CSS), JavaScript and cookies as these are essential for optimal portal performance. A valid Class 2 or Class 3 Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) is also required for certain filings.
7.3 crore Income Tax Returns Filed by September 15
Despite the issues, a record 7.3 crore ITRs had been filed by September 15, already exceeding last year's numbers. Still, many believe this figure could have been even higher had the portal operated without technical hindrances. The decision to extend the deadline by just one day is being widely criticized, with many taxpayers and professionals calling for more time given the ongoing challenges.
