Air India Compensates Nearly Two-Thirds of Families Affected by June 12 Crash

Air India has compensated families of nearly two-thirds of the victims from the June 12 plane crash in Ahmedabad. The Air India Dreamliner, flying from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick, crashed shortly after takeoff, resulting in 260 fatalities, including those on the ground. Campbell Wilson, Air India's CEO and Managing Director, stated that their teams are assisting families with interim compensation.

In an internal message to employees, Wilson mentioned that Air India is committed to upgrading its aircraft, products, services, systems, and personnel. Tata Sons is working on a framework to provide long-term support to the affected families and survivors. The crash involved a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner operating as Air India flight AI171.

Compensation and Support Initiatives

Out of 242 passengers onboard, 241 lost their lives, with the total death toll reaching 260 due to casualties on the ground. Tata Sons announced a compensation of Rs 1 crore for each family of the deceased. On June 14, Air India offered an interim compensation of Rs 25 lakh (approximately GBP 21,500) to help families address immediate financial needs.

Wilson assured that Air India's presence in Ahmedabad will continue as needed to complete this process. He also confirmed that reuniting next of kin with their loved ones and repatriating them has been completed. As they move forward from the immediate aftermath, Tata Sons is setting up mechanisms for long-term assistance.

Operational Adjustments and Safety Measures

Air India has implemented a "Safety Pause," temporarily reducing its international and domestic networks. This decision was made to allow additional aircraft checks and manage the volatile international airspace environment. Wilson acknowledged that this pause has impacted customers and increased pressure on frontline staff at call centres and airports.

The temporary reduction in flights aims to stabilise schedules and restore trust. It also provides extra time for enhancing aircraft reliability programs. On June 18, Air India announced a 15% reduction in international flights operated with widebody planes until mid-July due to operational disruptions from enhanced safety inspections and geopolitical factors.

The tragic accident of AI171 marks one of Air India's darkest days. Despite the cause, it signifies the beginning of a new era for the airline. Wilson reiterated their commitment to investing in improvements across various aspects of their operations.
