Markets open firm; recover lost ground

Markets opened the day higher, following a sharp drop on Thursday, on short covering and buying support from institutions.

The BSE Sensex was trading higher at 17316.90, up 120.43 points over its previous close. The NSE too was trading higher with the NSE Nifty at 5264 points, up 36 points, at 9.30 am IST.

Among the gainers today were Jaiprakash Associates, Sesa Goa, Reliance Power and Steel Authority of India.

Shares of automobile companies were trading weak today with Maruti Zuzuki, Hero Motor Corp and Bajaj Auto all marginally down.

Markets are expected to continue to take cues from global markets and global developments, given the fact that most of the domestic policy decisions are over.
