Railways passing through difficult phase: Railway Minister

Railways Minister, Dinesh Trivedi said the railways was passing through a difficult phase, hinting at the organisation's poor financial health.

The Minister said that the gross receipts for the year 2012-2013 was expected to be Rs 1.33 lakh crore, while the FY 13 ordinary expenses was seen at Rs 84,400 crore. Freight earning was estimated at Rs 89,339 crore for FY 13, the Minister pointed out.

Trivedi said that Railways had taken a loan from the Ministry of Finance, which the Railways intends to pay before the end of the year.

The Railway Budget has not enthused many, though a positive takeaway from the Budget is that there have been not too many giveaways, as many had expected.
