Markets opened the week on a steady note, with a slight negative bias. The BSE Sensex was trading lower by 68 points at 18,855 points, while the Nifty was trading down by 23 points at 5406 points, at 9.20 am IST.
Among the losers were Sesa Goa, which lost 7% reacting to the Vedanta Group's decision to merge Sterlite Industries with the company. The other shares that were trading soft included IDFC, Ambuja Cements and ACC.
Among the top gainers today were Sterlite Industries, Cairn and BPCL. Most of the Asian indices were trading up, including Nikkei and Hang Sang.
