What is Delhi Free Gas Cylinder Scheme?
Delhi Free Gas Cylinder Scheme was promised by the Delhi government before the Delhi elections. The scheme will begin from Holi. Under the scheme, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led Delhi government will provide free LPG cylinder for poor families on Holi and Diwali. Additionally, beneficiaries will get an additional subsidised cylinder at Rs 500.
How To Register For Delhi LPG Gas Cylinder Scheme?
So far, there is still uncertainty over the registration process for the scheme. Media reports suggest that the scheme will cover ration card holders from economically weaker sections starting from Holi. The amount for a single LPG cylinder will be disrbursed among beneficiaries via direct benefit transfer (DBT) to their Aadhaar-linked bank accounts.
"The scheme will cover ration card holders belonging to economically weaker sections in Delhi. The government has identified eligible beneficiaries through the existing ration card database, and the benefit will be extended to households classified as poor under the public distribution system framework. Holi onwards, these families will receive financial assistance of approximately Rs 850, equivalent to the cost of one LPG cylinder," Hindustan Times quoted an official.
The free LPG cylinder scheme stems from commitments made by the Bharatiya Janata Party during the Delhi Assembly elections earlier this year. The BJP manifesto promised one free cylinder on Holi and Diwali for poor families, along with an additional plan to offer LPG at a subsidised rate of ₹500 per cylinder.
With the Rekha Gupta-led government marking one year in office, officials said the administration has chosen to activate at least one part of that election pledge. The immediate focus is on the free cylinder benefit, while other components announced during the campaign remain under separate examination.
The cabinet cleared the proposal during a meeting on Tuesday and earmarked Rs 300 crore for its launch and operation. According to officials, this amount is meant to cover the cost of transferring funds for one cylinder on each of the two festivals to eligible families across the city.
