Passport Seva 2.0 Launched: Easy Online Application for e‑Passport, Eligibility, Fees & Centres
The Government of India has launched Passport Seva 2.0 and rolled out e‑passports across select cities. External Affairs Minister Dr S. Jaishankar announced the new system on the occasion of the 13th Passport Seva Divas 2025. Here's everything you need to know about the new e‑passport, how to apply online, and who is eligible.
What is Passport Seva 2.0?
Passport Seva 2.0 is an upgraded version of India's passport service system. It comes with new technology and faster processes, which will also provide more transparency. One key feature is the mPassport Police App, which has already helped reduce police verification time to 5-7 days in many states. The main goal of this initiative is to make the entire passport process from application to delivery super quick and hassle-free.
What is an e‑passport?
An e‑passport is a smart passport with an electronic chip inside it. This chip stores your personal and biometric details, like your name, photo, date of birth, and even fingerprints.

The chip is embedded inside the back cover of the passport. It is secure, cannot be tampered with, and follows international standards. This means your e‑passport will be accepted easily at airports around the world.
Benefits of the New e‑Passport
There are several benefits of using an e‑passport. It provides enhanced security, reducing the chances of forgery or misuse. It also allows for faster immigration clearance at international airports. In the future, e‑passports will also support automated e-gates, allowing passengers to clear passport control without manual checks. Most importantly, they are accepted across the globe, as they meet ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organisation) standards.
Where Is the e‑Passport Available?
Currently, e‑passports are being issued in 13 cities across India. These include Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad, Goa, Ranchi, Jaipur, Amritsar, Raipur, Shimla, Nagpur, Surat, and Bhubaneswar. If you apply for a passport from one of these cities, you will automatically receive an e‑passport. The government plans to expand the rollout to the rest of the country by the end of 2025.
Who Can Apply?
Anyone who is eligible for a normal passport can apply for an e‑passport. This includes first-time applicants, people applying for renewals, minors, and even government officials. The required documents remain the same-such as an Aadhaar card, proof of address, and proof of date of birth like a birth certificate or school records.
