Income Tax Department Mandates Pan Card and Aadhar Card Linking: Check Last Date to Link
The Income Tax department has mandated linking existing PAN cards with Aadhaar by December 31, 2025. Failure to do so will render the PAN card non-functional from the following year. This measure aims to prevent tax evasion by individuals obtaining multiple PANs or using others' PANs.
New Requirements for PAN Card Applications
Starting July 2025, applying for a new PAN card will necessitate an Aadhaar card for verification purposes. This requirement is part of a broader initiative to streamline processes and improve compliance in tax-related matters.
The Income Tax department's decision follows instances of misuse involving multiple PANs for fraudulent GST registrations. As of March 2024, India had over 740 million PAN cardholders, with 605 million having linked their Aadhaar.
Linking Aadhaar with Existing PAN Cards
Existing PAN cardholders must link their cards with Aadhaar by the end of 2025 to avoid penalties. The linkage is crucial to maintain the functionality of the PAN cards beyond this deadline.
The introduction of mandatory Aadhaar verification reflects a significant step towards digitalising India's tax system. It aims to enhance transparency and accountability in financial transactions.
