With the month of September, the deadline for filing income tax return (ITR) is nearing on the 15th. With just 15 days left for completing the process, the Income Tax Department has encouraged the first time ITR filers to register at Income Tax Portal with ease. If ITR is not filed on time, chances of facing penalty is high for taxpayers.
Income Tax Return Filing Deadline:
Earlier, the department extended the due date of filing of ITRs for AY2025-26. The new deadline is scheduled on September 15, compared to the earlier due date of 31st July 2025.

Through its X handler, the IT department said, "New to the Income Tax Portal?," adding, "Registering on the Income Tax Portal is easy! "

How To Register At Income Tax Portal:
According to IT department guidelines, the Pre-Login Service is available to all Taxpayers. This manual is meant for all taxpayers (except Companies who have another exclusive User Manual on the e-filing portal) who want to register on and access the e-Filing portal. The Registration service enables the taxpayer to access and track all tax-related activities.
Details like valid and active PAN card, valid mobile number, valid Aadhaar card, and email ID will be required for registering at IT portal.
Step-By-Step Guide To Register For E-Filing:
Step 1: Go to the e-Filing portal homepage, click Register.
Step 2: Enter your PAN under Register as a Taxpayer option and click Validate. In case the PAN is already registered or invalid, an error message is displayed.
If PAN and Aadhar are linked then in pop up message, select checkbox to Confirm to validate details with UIDAI database.
Step 3: Enter all the mandatory details including Name, DOB / DOI, Gender (if applicable) and Residential Status as per your PAN on the Basic Details page and click Continue.
Step 4: After PAN is validated, the Contact Details page appears for individual taxpayers. Enter your Contact Details including Primary Mobile Number, email ID and Address. Click Continue.
Step 5: Two separate OTPs are sent to the primary mobile number and email ID mentioned, Enter the separate 6 digit OTPs received on the mobile number and email ID and click Continue.
Step 6: Edit the details in the page if necessary and click Confirm.
Step 7: On the Set Password page, enter your desired password in both the Set Password and Confirm Password textboxes. Enter your personalized message and click Register.
Step 8: When you are successfully registered, click Proceed to Login to begin the login process.
Income Tax Return Filing Late Penalty:
As per IT department FAQs, under section 234F, late filing fees of Rs. 5,000 shall be payable if return furnished after due date specified under section 139(1). However amount of late filing fees to be paid shall be Rs.1,000, if the total income of the person does not exceed Rs.5 lakhs.
