How to Apply for PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana; Step-by-Step Guide to Get 300 Free Units of Electricity
The PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana is one of the most ambitious government schemes aimed at reducing household electricity bills and promoting clean energy. Under this rooftop solar scheme, the government offers subsidies for installing rooftop solar panels, enabling eligible households to receive up to 300 units of free electricity every month. The scheme targets 1 crore households across India to make solar power more affordable and accessible for residential consumers.

What Is PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana?
The PM Surya Ghar Yojana is a central government scheme started on January 22, 2024 and is designed to encourage rooftop solar adoption among residential consumers. By providing financial assistance in the form of subsidies, the scheme significantly lowers the upfront cost of installing solar systems and helps households reduce their dependence on grid electricity.
Households installing rooftop solar systems under this scheme can generate their own power, lower monthly electricity bills, and even earn credits through net metering.
PM Surya Ghar Subsidy for 5kW Rooftop Solar System
For households planning to install a 5kW rooftop solar system, the scheme offers substantial financial support. The total cost of a 5kW solar system typically ranges between Rs. 3 lakh and Rs. 3.2 lakh before subsidies.
Under the central government subsidy, beneficiaries are eligible for Rs. 78,000, calculated as Rs. 30,000 for the first 2kW and Rs. 18,000 per kW for the next 3kW. In addition to this, several states provide additional state-level subsidies. For instance, in Uttar Pradesh, households can receive up to Rs. 30,000 extra, taking the total subsidy to around Rs. 1.08 lakh.
After accounting for both central and state subsidies, the net cost of a 5kW rooftop solar system comes down to approximately Rs. 1.92 lakh to Rs. 2.12 lakh, which makes solar installation significantly more affordable.
Eligibility Criteria for PM Surya Ghar Yojana
To apply for the PM Surya Ghar rooftop solar subsidy, applicants must meet certain eligibility conditions. The scheme is open to Indian citizens who own or occupy a residential property with sufficient shadow-free rooftop space. For a 5kW system, around 500 square feet of rooftop area is generally required.
Applicants must have a valid electricity connection in their own name and should not have availed any previous government subsidy for rooftop solar installation. A bank account linked to Aadhaar is mandatory, as the subsidy amount is transferred directly to the beneficiary's account. The scheme is applicable to individual homeowners, RWAs, and group housing societies.
